CHAPTER FIVE
The 7 Secret Keys That Will Open the Door to Wonderful Sexuality and Sensuality after Menopause
The path to great sex and enhanced pleasure after menopause can be summed up in seven keys that you’ll discover as you read on. You don’t necessarily have to follow them in order, and you may even want to use more than one key at a time. In fact, I highly encourage it! You may find some easier than others, and you may not want to take each and every suggestion I offer. Nevertheless, I assure you that some version of each key is vital for your maximum pleasure and vibrant health—not to mention a dynamite sex life. So try to stay open, dive right in, and have fun finding what works best for you!
1. Become an Ardent Explorer of Your Own Pleasure
Pay attention to what delights, inspires, and uplifts you. Remember that whatever you pay attention to expands! So if you’re focusing on what pleases you, you’re going to get more of it. (And conversely, if you’re spending a lot of time thinking about what you feel you lack or what you don’t like about your life, guess what will happen? You’ll get more of that negative stuff back!)
Be as specific as possible, and write down everything you think of. I want you to really have fun with this! And then look for ways to make those desires manifest. The idea is to cultivate more joy, moment by moment. For example, one of my big pleasures is taking a hot bath each evening. Whenever I travel, I insist on a room that has a tub instead of just a shower. There’s something about immersing myself in water that’s very healing; it restores me in a way that nothing else does.
Do you like sexy lingerie? Go shopping for something new—and then wear it! Not just sometimes— wear it regularly. (It won’t bring you nearly as much joy if it’s just sitting in your bureau drawer!) Do you enjoy curling up with a book, but seldom make the time to read? Either wake up 15 minutes earlier each day to read, or if you’re not a morning person, commit to going to bed with your book 15 minutes early every evening. If you love fresh flowers, don’t wait for someone to send them to you. Buy some for yourself once a week—even if it’s just a bouquet you pick up in the florist’s section of the grocery store while you’re doing your weekly food shopping. Better yet, call in an order and have a glorious bouquet delivered with a love note to yourself.
If you love getting a massage, make an appointment for one at least once a month. If you can’t afford that, agree to exchange a back rub or foot rub with your partner or best friend on a regular basis. You can do the same with a manicure or pedicure.
Maybe you’d like a romantic evening out with your partner on a regular basis. (Who wouldn’t?) Ask for it! And be very specific about what would please you.
